About Jar of Wood
I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be able to take a piece of wood and, with the use of a knife, make something beautiful. In 2004, I thought I’d give it a try. I did not want to attempt a caricature of a person or animal; I wanted to start with something more basic. I have always loved spoons. I am not sure why–but I love the feel and designs of different spoons. So, with the use of my husband’s pocket knife, then a set of exacto knives, I choose a piece of wood and worked away. It took only a week before I had my finished product. I gave myself a good cut in the process of my work, so when I was done I put my knives away for a while, not knowing if I’d try it again.
In January 2007, I was restless and wondering which of my many hobbies I should pick up again. Feeling more cautious and a little wiser I gave carving another go. I’ve been enjoying it so much that I want to share what I do with other people. So, by God’s grace, I will continue to make spoons not only for my own enjoyment, but yours also.
Why “Jar of Wood” for a name? My husband’s web page is called ”The Hjelle Jar,” a play off of our last name. (When pronounced the butchered American way it sounds like “jelly.”) I wanted a name that would sound good along side of The Hjelle Jar, yet could stand on its own. It is also inspired by a few pictures I took of my spoons in a jar, which is where we store them when not in use. Hence Jar of Wood.
I love carving, I hope to enjoy it for many years, and I hope I can share my enjoyment with others too. If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail I’ll do my best to answer them: .
Thank you for looking at our web page.
In Christ, Rita Hjelle
